News Overview
MAS announced that it would ease the requirements family offices must meet to qualify for tax incentives while expanding and strengthening anti-money laundering (AML) checks on sources of funds. The changes took effect on August 1, 2026.
Key Changes and Takeaways
Relaxed Employment Requirements for Investment Professionals
The number of Investment Professionals required at the time of application has been reduced, and a grace period – until the end of the first financial year – has been introduced for meeting the requirement. This reduces the burden during the initial setup phase.
More Efficient Tracking of Assets Under Management (AUM)
The requirement to track AUM in designated investments continuously has been removed. Reporting is now required only at the time of application and at the end of each financial year.
Greater Flexibility in the Local Spending Requirement
In addition to spending on local businesses, donations and grants for blended finance (public-private financing) may now count toward the requirement.
Enhanced Screening of Beneficial Owners
To improve transparency, AML checks have been extended to all parties that contributed to the source of funds and will be applied retroactively.
Industry Response and Outlook
According to professional advisers, as of the end of 2025, Singapore was home to more than 2,000 SFOs benefiting from tax incentives, many of which manage assets originating from Asia-Pacific, Europe, and the Americas.
The changes are viewed as being intended to “reduce administrative burdens (compliance costs) while maintaining regulatory transparency and governance, thereby reinforcing Singapore’s position as an attractive wealth hub.”
