Membership and Admission Guide
A place where families and practitioners develop knowledge together
The Family Office Practitioners Association of Japan has established a membership program to develop knowledge and practice relating to family offices from both the family side and the practitioner side.
The Association is neither an industry group for professionals alone nor a membership organization only for families. It is a place where founders, business-owning families, and asset-owning families can access knowledge and practical developments relating to family offices. It is also a place where practitioners in fields such as tax, law, investment management, real estate, business succession, trusts, M&A, next-generation education, and philanthropy can learn across disciplines and share their expertise.
When families participate, practitioners are able to understand real issues more deeply. When practitioners participate, families are able to access trusted professional knowledge.
The Association offers membership categories according to each member’s purpose of participation and level of involvement in the Association’s activities.
Membership categories
General Member
General Membership is designed for those whose primary purpose is to gain systematic knowledge through information, reports, seminars, study sessions, and other activities relating to family offices.
This category is open not only to founders, business-owning families, and asset-owning families, but also to practitioners and professionals who wish to deepen their understanding of family offices.
General Members are offered opportunities to participate in the Association’s core activities, including member reports, seminars, study sessions, member-only events, and information updates on domestic and international developments.
Professional Member
Professional Membership is designed for members with expertise or practical experience relating to family offices who wish to participate more actively in the Association’s activities.
This category is primarily intended for practitioners and professionals in areas such as tax, law, investment management, real estate, business succession, trusts, M&A, insurance, next-generation education, philanthropy, and international structuring.
In addition to the activities available to General Members, Professional Members are offered opportunities to take part in study groups, contribute to reports and seminars, share expertise on specialist themes, and exchange views with other members.
The Association emphasizes that information shared by Professional Members should be consistent with the Association’s purpose and should contribute to the sound development of family office practice. The Association is not intended primarily for the sale of specific products or the referral of individual transactions, and places importance on neutrality, confidentiality, and the management of conflicts of interest.
For families
For founders, business-owning families, and asset-owning families, a family office is not merely a tool for investment management or inheritance tax planning.
It is a framework for considering, over the long term, what should be protected and how it should be passed on, including the business, ownership, family relationships, next-generation education, and the family’s relationship with society.
The Association provides families with a place to access professional knowledge, organize their own issues, and support better long-term decision-making.
For practitioners
Family office practice involves a wide range of professional fields. At the same time, expertise in a single field may not be sufficient to address a family’s long-term issues as a whole.
The Association provides practitioners with opportunities to learn across disciplines, understand the concerns of families, and pursue a higher standard of practice.
Professional Members will also be offered opportunities to share their expertise and perspectives through reports, seminars, study sessions, and other Association activities.
Membership fees
Members of the Association are asked to pay an admission fee upon joining, together with an annual membership fee according to their membership category.
Membership fees are used to support research, report preparation, seminars and study sessions, member information services, and the development of the Association’s operating platform.
Details regarding membership fees, the scope of activities available to each category, renewal timing, and other conditions will be provided individually in the membership information materials.
The fee level differs between General Membership and Professional Membership. Professional Membership is intended for members who participate more actively in the Association’s activities, including the sharing of expertise and cooperation with study sessions, seminars, and other initiatives.
Admission process
Those considering membership are first asked to request the membership information materials. The secretariat will send you materials setting out the fees, the steps involved, and the documents required.
Applications for membership are accepted through the procedure prescribed by the Association. After receiving an application, the Association will review the submitted information and inform the applicant of the admission result and the appropriate membership category.
The Association places importance on providing a trusted environment in which families and practitioners can participate with confidence. For this reason, applicants are asked to understand the Association’s purpose and to respect confidentiality and mutual trust among members.
Payment method
Membership fees are payable by bank transfer or credit card, based on an invoice issued by the Association.
The formal payment method, bank account details, payment deadline, and other information will be provided individually after admission is approved.
Notes
Member activities may be changed or expanded as the Association’s activities develop.
The Association is not intended primarily for the sale of specific products or the referral of individual transactions. In member interactions and in information shared by Professional Members, the Association emphasizes neutrality, confidentiality, and the management of conflicts of interest.
Unless otherwise provided in the Articles of Incorporation or other relevant rules, members under the Association’s membership program are distinct from statutory members who hold voting rights at the general meeting of members under the General Incorporated Associations and General Incorporated Foundations Act.
